Companies in the defence sector use a wide range of radioactive materials in specialist weaponry, electronic information and detection systems.

Long-term programmes to deal with surplus items at end of life often include large inventories of closed sources and  open waste, many of which are complex and decades old. Typical items include industrial smoke detectors, Tritium luminising devices, Am-241 or Sr-90 closed sources and Depleted Uranium and Ra-226 items from land remediation projects.

For over 17 years we have been handling small inventories to major site clearances of several 100 items. Our clients tell us that they value our ability to find a solution to their entire surplus inventory and our application of the highest standards of safety supported by a robust and transparent Quality Management system that meets the demands of ISO 9001:2008. Our collection Technicians have more than 250 years experience between them and you can rest assured that our focus on conducting collections safely is second to none. We do the job properly.

Government departments and agencies such as The Ministry of Defence, The Home Office, Defence Equipment & Support and The Environment Agency all take their environmental responsibilities seriously and many have policies and recycling targets to support. We are at the forefront of the drive to recycle more radioactive ‘waste’ and any surplus closed sources you may have will always first be evaluated for recycling.

Many of our clients have no formal radioactive training; others are Radiation Protection Supervisors or retained Radiation Protection Advisors. However you are organised, our experience with radioactive materials means that we have trained, professional staff available to provide the right level of support through the complex processes of recycling closed sources, tritium, depleted uranium, contaminated metals or disposal of open waste.

We are used to supporting defence Integrated Project Teams as well as site based teams in reducing their radioactive liabilities. We have proven capability in handling sensitive inventories from secure sites whilst meeting with needs of the regulators.
