Closed sources are items where radioactive material is secured within ‘robust physical containment’. Closed sources are used in a wide range of applications, such as in healthcare & education to diagnose and treat patients, support teaching and research. In industry where they are found in instruments and gauges that determine levels, volumes and thicknesses of various materials. And for specialist weaponry, electronic information and detection systems by defence & government organisations. During their working lifetime, closed sources require detailed regulatory management. Even once they become ‘surplus’, the level of regulatory interest continues to ensure that they are properly recycled or disposed of. In addition to the operational problems surplus closed sources represent, they are a considerable financial liability. Finding the right partner to help identify an appropriate and cost-effective recycling or disposal route is vital.
