Where radioactive material is not secured within ‘robust physical containment’, it is often referred to as ‘open waste’. As such, the regulations governing the disposal of this material are quite different from closed sources. Types of open waste are extremely diverse but can include C-14 generated from research & development, medical and educational uses; Tritium and Magnesium/Thorium waste from defence related processes and Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) from oil & gas companies. The complex nature of the regulations governing the disposal of radioactive waste such as exemption orders means that many organisations need guidance and advice throughout the process. Where there is insufficient data to enable the safe removal of the open waste, experienced Safeguard International personnel can visit your site to carry out an assessment of your material. Safeguard International has access to approved routes for the disposal of many types of radioactive open waste material and, together with a comprehensive knowledge of the regulations, available technologies and current best practice, is ideally placed to support clients in their applications for RSA 93 Authorisation from the Environment Agency or Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Our clients tell us that they value our ability to find a solution to their entire surplus inventory and our application of the highest standards of safety supported by a robust and transparent Quality Management system that meets the demands of ISO 9001:2000. We do the job properly.
